The “Three-Part Aim” is an increasingly popular term in conversations about the future of health care in the United States. Embracing a vision for a healthier America, the Three-Part Aim, a term promoted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, lays out three inter-related goals:

  • Better care
  • Better health
  • Lower costs through improvement

Every physician can play a part in making this vision a reality. One way to participate in achieving these aims is to join the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (PCPI®). A recognized leader in health care quality and patient safety, this physician-led group is turning its expertise to improving health outcomes across the country.

During its semi-annual membership meeting under way Wednesday and Thursday in Chicago, the PCPI is rolling out its new strategy to impact health outcomes in a way that will support improvement in patient care and reduce health care costs. Specifically, the PCPI is focusing its efforts on four initiatives:

  • Identification of clinical and patient-reported outcomes relevant to a variety of patient populations.
  • Enhancement of patient registries as a source for high-quality data to monitor and benchmark improvement.
  • Advancement of the culture and science of quality improvement.
  • Development of measurement capabilities in partnership with its member organizations.

Having developed quality and performance measures for more than a decade, the PCPI is well-positioned to improve health outcomes. The PCPI has created more than 280 individual evidence-based measures in 46 clinical areas to help physicians and others enhance the quality of patient care and outcomes, many of which have been adopted by national programs.

Most recently, the National Quality Forum endorsedExternal Link PCPI measures on the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia.

The PCPI has the strength of 190 health care organizations in its membership. Physicians can contribute their expertise to the PCPI’s work to improve the quality of care delivery by joining as anindividual memberPDF FIle or an organizational memberPDF FIle.
